The UNESCO World Heritage Sites List is a list of properties around the world considered to be of special cultural or physical significance. The list is maintained by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and properties are nominated by the countries in which they are located. Once a property is added to the list, it is protected under international treaties and agreements and is also eligible for financial and technical assistance from UNESCO. Selection Criteria of UNESCO World Heritage Sites
There are several criteria that UNESCO uses to evaluate and select sites for inclusion on the World Heritage List. These criteria include:
- Represent a masterpiece of human creative genius
- Exhibit an important interchange of human values
- Bear a unique or exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization that is living or which has disappeared
- Be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble, or landscape that illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history
- Be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance
- Contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance
- Be an outstanding example representing major stages of earth’s history, including the record of life, significant ongoing geological processes in the development of landforms, or significant geomorphic or physiographic features.
- Be an outstanding example representing significant ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals.
Sites must also meet at least one of the following conditions:
- to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity;
- to be outstanding examples representing significant ongoing ecological and biological processes;
- to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity;
- to be representative areas of the major biotic regions of the earth.
