What is 5S?

5S refers to 5 Japanese terms which have been used to describe the steps of the 5S system. Each term starts with “S”. As per the Japanese language, 5S’s are SeiriSeitonSeisoSeiketsu, and Shitsuke. But in English, 5S’s are Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.

 

What is KAIZEN?

Kaizen is the participatory problem-solving process. Kaizen is a term that refers to ongoing or continuous improvement. The definition of kaizen comes from two Japanese words: ‘kai’ meaning ‘change’ and ‘zen’ meaning ‘good’. The Japanese philosophy was first introduced by Toyota back in the 1980s and has since been adopted by thousands of companies around the globe. This lean transformation encourages an improvement culture that gradually increases quality, efficiency, and profitability.

The Kaizen approach is beneficial for a wide variety of business models and operational philosophies. Kaizen process

The Kaizen process can be summarized down into four steps: PDCA – Plan, Do, Check & Act. Here’s a quick overview of what each step entails:

Do – implement the plan and make any changes required to ensure it works.
Check – evaluate the results and identify opportunities for improvement.
Act – make adjustments based on what’s found in the previous step.

5S Methodology

The 5S methodology originated in Japan and it was first implemented by the Toyota Motor Corporation. This 5S methodology was developed as a way to make just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing possible.

The 5S methodology has gained importance throughout the years and is now one of the basic foundational elements of Lean, along with other Lean processes and practices such as:

The term 5S is often paired with Lean because 5S is a foundational part of Lean manufacturing. Implementing 5S in a workplace makes it easier for people to navigate, find what they need, and keep things organized.

5S is a philosophy and a way of organizing and managing the workspace and workflow with the intent to improve efficiency by eliminating waste, improving flow, and reducing process unreasonableness.
